Subject
Painting, landscape with figures
Description
This colorful landscape shows Cubist influences, using a fractured, geometric approach to space and form. Unframed. Signed on the lower right: ''Kàdàr Béla'.
Provenance: Collection of Elizabeth (Bözsi) Fay, Hungarian artist and owner of Mayfair Gallery in NYC. Kádár also was related to Elizabeth as her uncle by marriage. Inherited upon her death in 1983. Béla Kádár (1877-1956) was a significant Hungarian artist in the early 20th century who bridged between traditional Hungarian folk art and modernist movements. Kádár blended contemporary international trends to create his own distinct style. Major exhibitions included the Sturm Gallery in Berlin and the Brooklyn Museum.

Kádár’s career aligns well with the Library’s transatlantic focus because the Brooklyn Museum hosted two shows of his work. His American presence was unusual among his Hungarian artist peers. The Brooklyn shows were facilitated by prominent art dealers Herwath Walden and Katherine Dreier as described in this auction bio:
